Chartwells Programs and Balanced Choices

Balanced Choices is Chartwells' comprehensive approach to wellness. A team of our registered dietitians performed an exhaustive analysis on what other state agencies, school districts, and industry professionals are doing. The result is a branding concept of "better for you" snacks, beverages, and meals that meet specific nutritional criteria, easily identified with signage, labels, and markers.

No more than 35% calories from fat
No more than 10% calories from saturated fat
No more than 35% sugar by weight (excluding fruits and vegetables)
No more than 480 mg sodium
No more than 200 calories

Beverage Criteria
100% fruit and vegetable juice (limited to 12 oz portion size)
Fat free and 1% milk products (8 - 16 oz portion size)
Water and flavored water without added sugar (unlimited portion size)
Caffeine free (except for flavored milk)

Chartwells Nutrition Education Program
Chartwells has created a program called Eat Learn Live to support the districts efforts towards wellness. The "Eat" manual addresses the nutrition standards for meals, snacks, and beverages served in the cafeterias. The "Learn" manual includes information about our nutrition education programs. The "Live" manual provides ideas for supporting a healthy school environment. For more information about these programs, please contact the resident dietitian.

Pyramid Pete introduces his new friends.... Theodore Eat, Sydney C. Learn and Eva Live!

As we begin the 2008-2009 school year, Chartwells School Dining Services is pleased to introduce the New Chartbuster program. Chartbusters is a year-long program containing promotion ideas and special event activities developed to maximize cafeteria participation in the National School Breakfast and Lunch program.

Each year elementary level, students follow an adventure of fun and nutrition education with the help of Pyramid Pete and his friends. This year we are pleased to present three New friends, Theodore Eat, Sydney C. Learn and Ava Live who will help teach students how to EAT, LEARN & LIVE in 2008-2009. Pete's new friends are representatives of nutrition and healthy living! This year Pyramid Pete and his friends will be learning about a new food focus every month. As Pete makes healthy food choices he will also be spreading the word about good nutrition and healthy eating habits.

During National Nutrition Month™ (March), corresponding with "Read Across America Week," Chartwells staff will be available to visit classrooms and speak to the nutritional messages familiarizing the students with the MyPyramid food guidance system. Chartwells staff will be available on an invitational basis to supplement nutrition education efforts in the classroom.
